TREATMENT FOR CERVICAL CANCER

Posted by admin on April 1st, 2009 filed in Women's Conditions

Treatment technique depends upon tumor size and location, disease stage and patient’s age and overall health. There are various techniques for treating cervical cancer:

Surgery
This is the primary treatment for cancer of the cervix in its early stages. Its requirement depends on the stage and location of the cancer. Some common surgical procedures are:

  • Conization. Conical piece of tissue is removed from the cervix and cervical canal for investigation and examination under a microscope.
  • Hysterectomy. Surgical procedure to remove cervix and uterus.
  • Bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Surgical procedure to remove the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
  • Radical hysterectomy. Surgical procedure to remove uterus, cervix, and part of the vagina. In this, the lymph nodes in the pelvic area are removed.
  • Pelvic exenteration. Surgical procedure to remove the lower colon, rectum, and bladder.
  • Cryosurgery. Surgery uses an instrument to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue, such as carcinoma in situ. Used to treat pre-invasive cancer of the cervix.
  • Laser surgery. Surgical procedure using a laser beam (a narrow beam of intense light) as a knife to make bloodless cuts in tissue or to remove a small piece of tissue.
  • Loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP). Treatment uses electrical current passed through a thin wire loop as a knife to cutting out the abnormal cells.
  • Radiation therapy
If the tumor has spread in more than a small amount beyond cervix, then only surgery is not sufficient, also radiotherapy is used. Uses X-rays or other high-energy particles to kill cancer cells. It may also be used after surgery to prevent recurrence. Patient may receive both internal and external radiation.

    Chemotherapy
Uses drugs to kill cancer cells. Can be done to destroy cancer remaining after surgery, slow the tumor’s growth, or reduce symptoms. In this, a series of injections are given into a vein.
