TREATING AND PREVENTING HEPATITIS

There are no specific treatments for the acute symptoms of viral hepatitis. Generally, the doctors suggest bed rest, a healthy diet, avoidance of alcoholic beverages and fatty foods. Medications may include vitamins and pills to reduce nausea and vomiting. Care must be taken to avoid any drug like contraceptive pills that may further cause injury to the liver cells.

In order to prevent hepatitis, one should keep in mind the following aspects:

Follow good hygiene and avoid crowded, unhealthy living conditions.

Take extra care, particularly when drinking and swimming, while traveling to areas, where sanitation is poor and water quality is uncertain.

Never eat shellfish from waters contaminated by sewage.

Remind everyone in the family to wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet and before eating.

Use antiseptic cleansers to clean any toilet, sink, potty-chair, or bedpan used by someone in the family who develops hepatitis.
