TREATING NON-CARDIAC CAUSES FOR CHEST PAIN
If the doctor comes to know that the cause of the chest pain is non-cardiac, then he may prescribe the following medications:
Heartburn. Treatment for chronic heartburn includes dietary modifications, antacids, acid blockers or other prescription medications and, in some cases, surgery.
Panic attack. Treated with prescription anti-anxiety medications, relaxation techniques and counseling to find out what triggers the attacks.
Pleurisy. Over-the-counter pain relievers help to minimize the pain until the inflammation subsides.
Costochondritis. Inflammation of the cartilage of the rib cage is generally treated by rest, heat and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others).
Sore muscles, injured ribs or pinched nerves. Can be improved with time and self-care measures recommended by the doctor.
Swallowing disorders. Treated with medications, minor surgery or endoscopic techniques.
Shingles. Treated with acyclovir (Zovirax) or a similar antiviral medication must be done within 24 hours from the onset of pain or burning, and before the appearance of blisters. Analgesics and antihistamines, can be used to control symptoms such as pain and itching.
Gallbladder or pancreas problems. Surgery is essential to treat the inflamed gallbladder or pancreas causing pain to radiate from the abdomen into the chest.
