TREATING FOOD ADDICTION

Food addiction may lead to obesity, eating disorders and diabetes. One would never like to exacerbate any of these or other conditions during the treatment of the food addiction. The first thing is to consult with the primary care doctor. He would then discuss the treatment course. Following are the other steps that can be used for coping with an addiction to food:

Counselor or therapist. Usually food addiction is considered to be psychological in nature. The person uses food as a patch to cover up deeper emotional issues. These need not be confronted alone. Make use of these professional to raise the chances of recovery.

Identify trigger foods. Different people have different food addictions. Some might have addiction of sugary foods, or pasta and carb-laden snacks or cheese, or chocolates. The most important step is to pinpoint the trigger food.

Slowly reduce amount of trigger foods. When the addict feels of having trigger food, make use of a small helping of fruit or veggies before you indulge. Whenever you feel to eat the trigger food, increases the quantity of the healthy food and lower the trigger food. Eventually, you will not only associate the healthy food, but will ultimately remove the trigger food from the diet.

Exercise. Trigger foods create a much-desired high, a rewarding feeling in the body. But this same feeling can be experienced by exercises. Thus, exercises are helpful for a food addict. This not only keeps the body fit and healthy, but also helps to replace the high one misses from the trigger foods. Joining a gym, keeps one motivated, as you will get to know others who share your goals.
